 Mathematics Department

Our philosophy …

The Heritage High School Math Department devotes itself to meeting the needs of all students by offering a dual program of instruction. Both programs cover the same curriculum, but use different approaches.Students can choose either a traditional path consisting of the common US high school sequence of courses, or a more contemporary path called Core-Plus Mathematics which involves an integrated development of concepts and student-centered investigations. The goal of both programs is to prepare students for college-level mathematics. If you are interested in learning more about these two programs, and which one would best suit your child, please refer to the links below.

The Traditional Mathematics Program:  Prentice Hall Mathematics

The Core-Plus Mathematics Program:  Core-Plus Mathematics

Our Honors track ...

Our honors track is designed for accelerated math students and includes all mathematics courses in the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program®.These include AP Statistics, AP CalculusAB, and AP Calculus BC.In addition, we also offer a non-AP level calculus course.

AP Statistics is available to all students who have successfully completed Algebra II and would like the challenge of the AP-level curriculum. This course is an excellent choice for students since knowledge of statistics is generally required for students who major in business, engineering, social science, health science, or the physical sciences.

Research indicates that students who participate in AP courses have significantly better college grades and college graduation rates than students who do not take AP courses. In addition, the College Board reports that Colorado high schools rank in the top 10 of states with the greatest percentage of graduating seniors who scored 3 or higher on an AP exam in high school. To learn more about our Advanced Placement Program®, please refer to the link at the right.
Our Math Topics program ...

Our department also focuses on supporting students who find mathematics a challenge. For these students we offer Math Topics, a course offered at both the freshmen and sophomore level, which is designed to help students acquire a better understanding of the basics of algebra before moving on to more advanced courses.

Using technology …

Using technology as a tool for learning is high priority in our math department.Students’ use of graphing calculators is an integral part of the learning process and is required in our Algebra I and Algebra II courses as well as the upper level courses including statistics, trigonometry, and calculus. Also, we have recently introduced the TI-Navigator System in some courses; TI-Navigator is an interactive technology designed to actively engage students during instruction. In addition, in various courses, students solve problems and explore concepts using Microsoft® Excel®.Our goal is to keep pace with rapidly advancing technology while properly balancing problem-solving techniques using technology and hand methods.

The use of technology has been extended to include the textbooks for Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry/Advanced Algebra Concepts. For these courses, the textbooks are available for viewing on-line from home.Students can access the text, tutorials, practice quizzes, and other activities to support classroom work.

The sequence of courses ...

In the table below, you will find the typical sequence of courses offered for the various programs; however, some students, due to their particular needs or interests, may vary from the suggested sequence. For example, upon successful completion of Algebra II, students may elect to take Probability and Statistics, or AP Statistics.Students successfully completing any of the four-year programs will be well-prepared for college-level mathematics. If you would like more information about any course listed below, please refer to the “Course Descriptions” link at the right.
